David's Library Book
Tuesday, August 29, 2023 by Phyllis Kester
It started as a usual school morning with two elementary-age boys and both parents rushing around to eat and get everything done when an outcry stopped us in our tracks. David, our very responsible first grader, was distressed about not being able to find his library book, and it was due today. You would have thought his life depended upon finding that book before the bus came.
My husband and I dropped everything to search David's room, under his bed, in his bed, in the closet and everywhere else we thought a book might hide. His older brother joined as we quickly searched the usual places inside the house, but still no book.
Given the imminent arrival of their school bus, David shouted in his most authoritative six-year-old voice. "Everybody, come here and hold hands! We've got to pray because my Sunday School teacher told me scripture says if two of us agree in prayer, it will be done by my Father in heaven."
Our youngest reached out his hands, his small fingers gripping mine tightly. "Let's pray," he repeated. "Then I'll find my book."
The rest of us exchanged skeptical looks. However, there was something in the earnestness of David's voice, so we bowed our heads and prayed. He began, "Dear God," in a clear and unwavering voice. "Please help me find my library book."
I was watching the clock and worried they would miss their bus. Then I heard the squeal as the school bus turned the corner onto our street. Panic and frenzied activity began. I held my breath as David scampered into his room to grab his belongings. He shrieked with joy. "I found it! I knew God would answer my prayer!" He raced out the front door, waving the book over his head triumphantly as he and his brother rushed to catch their bus—leaving two stunned parents standing in the doorway.
I turned to Monty. "I searched every corner of that room. There's no way he could just run in and find that book in plain sight."
Monty shrugged. "I searched too, Hon." Then he grinned and added, "Maybe the same Lord who led the Children of Israel for 40 years sent an angel to deliver a library book to strengthen a six-year-old's faith."
As a result, David's quest for his missing library book brought forth a miracle. It reminded us that the power of togetherness in prayer and faith can sometimes move mountains or even help a first-grader find his lost library book. Strange how what we perceived as a problem turned into such a teaching tool in the hands of a loving God.

Wow, what a miracle in the face of loss and prayer. I love this story Phyllis. God has a way of making the impossible actually possible with prayer. That is what makes us "believers". Helen AnnReply by: Phyllis
I think one of the delightful things about being a believer is seeing how God shows up in unexpected ways at times.Previous Posts
